The cold has arrived. Suddenly, and almost without warning after these almost summer temperatures that we have had until recently. The cold is especially noticeable at night. Nights when you already need to wrap yourself in a good duvet.
And if you still don’t have yours, or if you are thinking of renewing your bedding, here are some tips to help you get the best quilt according to the store of sleep products.
The materials. Duvets are usually filled with natural or synthetic materials. Natural fillings are usually made with blends of feathers and down, although we can also find them made of wool or silk, although they are much less common to find.
These fillings are lighter, softer, and warmer. In addition, its moisture wicking properties are better than those of synthetic duvets. Of course, they are usually slightly more expensive, but have a longer useful life, since they can last between 10 and 15 years.
On the one hand, light duvets (between 175 and 250 g / m²) are perfect for temperatures between 18 and 22º. Medium duvets (between 300 and 350 g / m²) are ideal for temperatures between 15 and 18º. And warm duvets (between 400 and 500 g / m²) are recommended for rooms with a temperature lower than 15º.
In addition, there are also quilts for all seasons that, in reality, are two quilts linked by brackets: a thin one for summer and a medium one for colder times.
The sheath. This element is essential when choosing a quilt, since in addition to its aesthetic part, it has the function of preventing the down or fibers from leaving the duvet. A cotton cover will allow the duvet to breathe properly and, consequently, will not retain moisture. If you chose a natural filling, a cotton percale cover will be the best option.
The stitching. Normally, almost nobody gives importance to the stitching. But it is also another key detail, as the stitching prevents heat from dissipating. In the case of a duvet with natural filling, the stitching in the form of patterned squares will be the best option since it will provide an even distribution of the filling in the duvet cover. On the other hand, for synthetic quilts, the best will be a quilted stitching, since it will improve the thermal insulation and the quilting of the duvet.
Measurements. This is another one of those questions that almost everyone asks when buying bedding. Will this measure apply to the bed? To choose the duvet, it is best that we have a margin of 30 to 50 centimeters on each side of the bed. As an example, if we have a 150 cm mattress we will need a 240 x 22 cm duvet.
